It-TORĊA llum
tagħlaq 50 sena.... Il-gazzetta twaqqfet b’missjoni –
Victor Carachi, President tal-GWU
It-TORĊA Il-Ħadd 25 ta' Ottubru 2009 http://www.it-torca.com/news.asp?newsitemid=8615
minn john pisani

Waqt serata letterarja li saret nhar il-Ġimgħa fil-Workers’ Memorial Building
fil-Belt, ġie mfakkar il-50 Anniversarju mill-ewwel ħarġa tal-gazzetta it-TORĊA.
Il-President tal-GWU, Victor Carachi qal li t-TORĊA għandha storja li fil-milja
tagħha titwaħħad ma’ dik tal-GWU u li bħall-GWU, it-TORĊA twaq-qfet b’missjoni.
Waqt l-istess serata kienu ppremjati dawk li rebħu l-kon-kors letterarju li
tnieda minn din il-gazzetta f’Awwissu li għadda.
Fid-diskors tiegħu Victor Carachi qal li l-gazzetta it-TORĊA hija l-prodott ta’
żmienha, ta’ kuntest fejn l-isfida tal-ħaddiem għall-kisba ta’ drittijietu kie-net
bdiet tieħu l-milja tagħha immedjatament wara t-tmiem tat-Tieni Gwerra Dinjija.
Kienet mixja twila dik mibdija mill-GWU, fil-5 ta’ Ottubru 1943 u li tkompliet
minn The Torch fis-sena ta’ wara. Kienet propju l-ħtieġa ta’ din il-mixja li
wasslet biex fil-25 ta’ Ottubru 1959 The Torch ħadet il-libsa l-ġdida ta’ it-TORĊA,
qal Carachi.
Huwa qal li it-TORĊA kienet l-ew-wel Sunday paper f’kull sens tal-kelma li
kienet Maltija. Ma kienx hawn biss li t-TORĊA saret parti mill-istorja ta’
pajjiżna. It-TORĊA kienet għal żmien twil l-unika vuċi konsistenti tal-movi-ment
trejdunjonistiku f’Malta, imma kienet ukoll, u għadha, vuċi kulturali ta’
pajjiżna.
Il-President tal-GWU qal li: “bħala GWU nagħtu bosta importanza lill-qasam
kulturali. Bħala union ġenerali tal-ħaddiema, huwa dmir tagħna li nħarsu lejn
il-ħaddiem bħala persuna, b’mod ħolistiku.” Carachi qal li: ma nistgħux, jekk
tassew irridu nirrappreżentaw tajjeb lill-ħaddiema membri tagħna, nifirdu
lill-ħaddiem mill-ħajja tiegħu barra mid-dinja tax-xogħol. Il-ħaddiema huma
ukoll aġenti kulturali. Dan l-impenn kulturali tal-ħaddiema mhux biss jgħollihom
‘il fuq fost is-soċjetà Maltija, imma ukoll jagħti valur akbar lill-klassi li
ġejjin minnha. Huwa xiehda li l-klassi ħaddemija hija tassew ix-xewka ta’ dahar
dan il-pajjiż.”
Fl-aħħarnett Victor Carachi feraħ lil dawk kollha li ħadu sehem u lil dawk li
organizzaw dan il-konkors fosthom lill-eks-President tal-GWU, Salv Sammut.
Waqt l-istess serata tkellem ukoll Alfred Massa mill-Għaqda Poeti Maltin li
sellem lil dawk li mexxew il-paġni letterarji ta’ din il-gazzetta fosthom
il-mibki Karmenu Ellul Galea, lil Mario Bezzina, Charles Flores u Francis Galea
li kollha ħadmu u stinkaw biex wasslu lill-qarrejja materjal utli, li ċertament
tefa’ dawl leqqien fuq il-mixja letterarja f’pajjiżna matul l-aħħar 50 sena.
Pawlu Mizzi, mill-Klabb Kotba Maltin, semma r-rabta bejn it-TORĊA u l-mixja
storika ta’ pajjiżna u qabbel kif il-Klabb, il-GWU u t-TORĊA dejjem imxew ’il
quddiem b’identità Maltija b’mod speċjali fl-użu tal-ilsien Malti.
Ir-rebbieħa tal-konkors letterarju fl-okkażjoni tal-50 Anniversarju tat-TOR-ĊA
huma: Konkors ta’ Proża - L-ewwel post Emmanuel Psaila bin-novella ‘Ġorġ Kanġi’.
Fit-tieni post Charles Casha bin-novella ‘Agħti Mulej, il-Mis-trieħ ta’ Dejjem’
u fit-tielet post Claudine Camilleri bin-novella ‘Lucy’.

Mħabba Qalbiena’. Fit-tieni post ukoll Stefano Farrugia bil-poeżija ‘Solitarja
Moribonda’ u fit-tielet post Charles Casha bil-poeżija ‘Li Kieku Nista’.
Waqt din is-serata saru intervalli mużikali mill-kantant folk Walter Mi-callef
fuq il-kitarra tiegħu filwaqt li s-serata tmexxiet minn Charles Magro.
Fost dawk preżenti kien hemm ukoll uffiċjali tal-GWU fosthom il-Viċi President
Edmond Cefai, l-Editur tat-TORĊA Aleks Farrugia, diriġenti tal-Union Print u l-Kap
tal-Pubblikazzjonijiet tal-Union Print Frans Ghirxi.
Ktejjeb b’edizzjoni limitata, li
jiġbor fih diskorsi u x-xogħlijiet rebbieħa se jkun mibjugħ fil-ġimgħat li

Lejla Mużiko-Letterarja fil-Gżira
L-Għaqda Poeti Maltin ġiet mistiedna biex tagħti sehemha waqt l-ewwel Lejla Letterarja mtellgħa mit-taqsima kultura tal-Kunsill Lokali tal-Gżira. Dan seħħ nhar il-Ġimgħa, 22 ta’ Mejju 2009, fit-8p.m., fis-sala moderna li hemm faċċata tal-Kulleġġ ta’ Stella Maris.
Il-viċi-Sindku, Dunstan Attard, poeta hu nnifsu u responsabbli għat-taqsima kultura, fetaħ il-lejla. Hu qal li huwa fil-ħsieb tal-Kunsill li Lejliet bħal dawn jibdew jittellgħu kull xahar f’atmosfera mill-aktar informali u li matulhom kull min jiġi jkun jista’ jaqra kitbiet ta’ ġeneri u natura differenti, basta f’ħin ta’ 5 minuti.
Patrick Sammut, il-viċi-President tal-GĦ.P.M., ta tagħrif dwar l-Għaqda u ħidmietha u sostna li l-Għaqda għaddejja minn perijodu produttiv tassew permezz tal-kontribut ta’ membri dedikati u li jaħdmu id f’id biex jittellgħu Lejliet ta’ Poeżija regolarment. Semma wkoll l-importanza tas-sit elettroniku u tal-e-mail li permezz tagħhom l-Għaqda żżomm lil dawk interessati informati dwar l-attivitajiet tagħha u anki tgawdi minn kuntatti saħansitra ma’ poeti u entitajiet kulturali li jmorru lilhinn minn xtutna.
Waqt il-Lejla nqraw kemm poeżiji, kif ukoll siltiet ta’ proża, u t-temi kienu varjati: storja, twemmin, immigrazzjoni, it-Tieni Gwerra Dinjija, il-familja u Mikiel Anton Vassalli. Il-Lejla ġiet mogħtija laqta mużikali bis-saħħa tal-kitarra u vuċi ta’ Jesmond Zerafa.
Fl-aħħar, il-viċi-Sindku, wera s-sodisfazzjon tiegħu u sostna li din kienet biss żerriegħa ta’ xi ħaġa li bil-mod il-mod għandha tikber u tissaħħaħ.
MUSICO-LITERARY EVENING AT GZIRAThe Maltese Poets Association was invited to lend its contribution during the first Literary Evening held by the cultural section of the Gżira Local Council. The said evening was held on Friday 22nd May 2009, at 8.00pm in the modern hall opposite the Stella Maris College. The Vice Mayor, Dunstan Attard, himself a poet and responsible for the cultural section, opened the night. In his speech he said that it is the intention of the said council that such evenings be held monthly in an informal fashion, during which all those present will be able to read their works of a varied genre and different nature, each during a 5 minute allotment.Patrick Sammut, the Vice- President of the GĦ.P.M. gave some information about the association and its work in favour of poetry and maintained that the association is currently enjoying a very productive phase through the sterling contribution of dedicated members who work hand in hand to hold such poetry evenings on a regular basis. He stated the importance of its website and its email through which the GĦ.P.M. keeps those interested, informed about its events and makes it possible for them to keep contacts with foreign cultural entities and poets.During the evening, poems and prose extracts were read. The themes varied: history, religion, immigration, the second World War, family and Mikiel Anton Vassalli. The musical interludes were provided vocally by Jesmond Zerafa to the accompaniment of his guitar. At the end, the vice Mayor expressed his satisfaction and said that this was just the seed for something that with time would grow and strenghten.
LEJLA POE-MUŻIKALI
FL-IMTARFA
POE-MUSICAL EVENING AT MTARFA
As part of the MTARFA DAY 2009 celebrations, the Mtarfa local council and the Maltese Poets Association organised a Poe-Musical evening at the Primary School hall of this locality on Saturday 25th April 2009.There was a very good attendance both from the members of the said poetry society as well as from the Mtarfa residents.
A good number of poems were read in Maltese, English and Italian. There were even children who read their poems. With regards to the musical aspect mezzo soprano Miriam Camilleri and a clarinet trio provided entertainment.Alfred Massa, the Association President, in his initial speech greeted the audience and said that it was the association's pleasure to take part in such events as in this way it will have a greater opportunity to meet the local residents. He reminded them that the association's main aim is to get poetry and the Maltese always closer to each other. He said poetry has something for us all, so he invited both readers and audience to find in poetry this something that appeals to them. Everyone can choose the type of poetry he liked best. Then he expressed his joy that even the children were participating. This was a good sign, as if they are taught to love poetry from childhood, there stands a better chance they would continue loving it as they grow. The Mtarfa mayor, Anton Mifsud expressed his satisfaction both for the good attendance as well as for the organisation of the said event. While thanking all those who played a part in it, he gave an account of all that his council put together in the locality since they took over for the term. The evening came to an end with the exchange of mementos by the Maltese Poets Association President and the Mayor. Mementos were also given to the mezzo soprano and the clarinet trio. The Maltese National Anthem was then sung. A reception followed the evening.Mr. Charles Magro, the association secretary, lead the evening.

STQARRIJA
B’din l-istqarrija l-Għaqda Poeti Maltin turi n-nuqqas ta’ qbil tagħha ma’ uħud mid-deċiżjonijiet dwar il-varjanti ortografiċi, meħuda mill-Kunsill Nazzjonali ta’ l-ilsien Malti.
L-oġġezzjonijiet tal-Għaqda Poeti Maltin huma bbażati fuq il-fatt li dawn id-deċiżjonijiet għamlu ħerba sħiħa minn regoli xjentifikament stabbiliti li jagħtu karatteristiċi lill-ilsien Malti li jagħmluh distint minn kull ilsien ieħor.
B’dawn id-deċiżjonijiet il-Kunsill Nazzjonali ta’ l-ilsien Malti qisu għażel it-triq il-ħafifa u ssanzjona żbalji ortografiċi li jkissru l-għajn ta’ min ikollu l-isfortuna li jarahom miktubin, minflok ma għamel ħiltu biex jgħallem lil min jagħmel dawn l-iżbalji ortografiċi biex, forsi fl-aħħar, ma jidhrux iktar. Din hi biċċa xogħol ferm aktar diffiċli.
L-Għaqda Poeti Maltin ma taqbilx mal-prinċipju li “il-poplu jagħmel l-ilsien”. Fil-kuntest Malti żgur li l-poplu jkisser l-ilsien, u ftit baqgħalna biex neqirduħ għal kollox. Għal min irid juża l-ilsien sewwa jeħtieġlu jkun iggwidat mill-istrutturi, u dawn żgur li ma jagħmilhomx il-poplu. Jagħmilhom l-istudjuż, wara analiżi bir-reqqa storika, xjentifika, etimoloġika, eċċ.
X’aħna nippruvaw nagħmlu? L-Għaqda Poeti Malitn tqis dawn id-deċiżjonijiet bħala tentattiv biex inwarrbu għal kollox il-patrimonju għani li ħallewlna missirijietna l-istudjużi tal-Malti, biex inħallu lil kulħadd jikteb li jrid u jitkellem kif irid. L-ilsien tagħna m’huwiex fonetiku, u m’hawn ebda Lsien ieħor li hu għal kollox fonetiku. Jekk kulħadd jikteb kif iħoss (kif qegħdin jitgħallmu jagħmlu t-tfal tagħna fl-iskejjel) ikollna żgur diżastru. Biżżejjed nikkunsidraw il-ħafna djaletti li għandna f’din id-daqsxejn ta’ Art ħelwa li ngħixu fiha.
Fl-aħħarnett infakkru li qatt ma tista’ tkun eliminata għal kollox id-distinzjoni bejn l-ilsien mitkellem u l-ilsien miktub; u d-distinzjoni hi ta’ ċerta konsistenza. Jekk se nibdew niktbu kif nitkellmu lil-letteratura tagħna m’aħniex se nħallulha wisq nifs biex tkun tista’ tixxabbat mal-ġnub tal-għolja tas-suċċess.
It-tama tal-Għaqda Poeti Maltin hi li, b’sens għaref ta’ umiltà, uħud mid-deċiżjonijiet meħuda jkunu rriveduti (dan sar ukoll fl-imgħoddi), qabel ma jagħmlu ħsara indelibbli lill-ġenerazzjonijiet ta’ Maltin tal-ġejjieni u lill-ilsien Malti.
RIŻULTAT
KONKORS NAZZJONALI TAL-POEŻIJA 2008
SERATA F'ĠIEĦ
POETA INGLIŻ
Fuq ix-xewqa tal-poeta u artist Ingliż, Stephen
Morris, l-Għaqda Poeti Maltin tellgħet Lejla ta' Poeżija
fir-Razzett tal-Markiz Tabone, il-Mosta, nhar il-Ħamis 2 ta'
Ottubru 2008 u li għaliha attendiet udjenza numeruża.
Inqraw poeżiji bil-Malti u bl-Ingliż dwar temi differenti.
Stephen Morris qara numru ta' poeżiji miktubin minnu. Huwa
kien intervistat minn Patrick Sammut dwar xogħlijietu u
mitlub jagħti l-opinjoni tiegħu dwar il-poeżija
kontemporanja.
Alfred Massa, President tal-Għaqda, f'diskors qasir qal li
din kienet it-tieni darba li l-Għ.P.M. qiegħda tilqa' lil
dan il-poeta bravu. Massa stieden lil dawk preżenti biex
jitgħallmu mill-poeżiji li jisimgħu, bħalma hu forsi qed
jitgħallem mill-poeżiji li qiegħed jisma'. Importanti

An Evening Dedicated to Kilin
25th September 2008
This evening was at the Dominican Order's convent in Rabat, in collaboration
with the Rabat Local Council and Michael Spiteri's or as he was better known
Kilin's children. The evening was very well attended which shows the high
esteem which both the GĦ.P.M. and Kilin enjoyed.
In the absence of Alfred Massa the association's President, Patrick Sammut
made a short introductory speech where he spoke of the association's many
activities. Then followed Kilin's profile. Dr. Joseph Axiaq, the vice
secretary of the association read a critical study of Kilin's works which
was written by Alfred Massa. Members of the GĦ.P.M. then read some of his
poems and exerpts from his works of prose. Some members of his family also
read poems dedicated to him or sang to his lyrics.
The musical interludes were executed by Walter Micallef, Miriam Camilleri
accompanied by Joanna Galea on the synthesizer and Soprano Marie Therese
Vassallo.
The Rabat Mayor Mr Alexander Kraus delivered the closing speech after which
a reception was held.

The Sunday Times, 20th July 2008
Well done to the organisers of The Malta Arts Festival 2008 for such a varied programme.
No fewer than 26 perfor-mances, including 225 artists, were incorporated in the programme.
It was very disappointing, however, to note that although there was such a variety of artists and events, poetry in any form and language was excluded. As stated by the minister, culture should include all kinds of talent from all the members of society to be enjoyed by all.
I am well aware that poetry is less appreciated by the public. However, poetry is a direct art which comes straight from the heart, and, in the light of The Maltese Poets' Association's events, I can vouch for a high standard of local poets.
They not only write in Maltese, but also in English, French and Italian.
Many have brought honour to Malta by presenting their works abroad. I look forward to see more inclusivity in cultural festivals.
ANTOLOĠIJA POETIKA MALTA-ITALJA
Nhar il-Ġimgħa, 11 ta’ Lulju, l-Għaqda Poeti Maltin qassmet kopji ta’ l-Antoloġija I SILENZI DELLA MONTAGNA E LE VOCI DEL MARE / SILENCES OF THE MOUNTAIN AND VOICES OF THE SEA lil dawk il-membri li pparteċipaw fiha. B’kollox 30 poeti Maltin flimkien ma’ 90 poeta Taljan għandhom xogħlijiethom stampati f’din l-Antoloġija.
Mexxa ċ-ċerimonja Charles Magro, li fisser kemm fl-Italja din l-Antoloġija sabet kritika pożittiva, kif wieħed jista’ jara minn ċerti websites u blogs.
L-ewwel kelliem kien Emmanuel Attard Cassar, Segretarju Internazzjonali tal-Għ.P.M. li ta rendikont dettaljat minn kif nibtet l-idea ta’ din l-Antoloġija sal-pubblikazzjoni tagħha. Din kienet stampata fl-Italja u saret b’kollaborazzjoni bejn iċ-Circolo Culturale Filatelico Numismatico ta’ Morbegnese u l-Għaqda poeti Maltin. Il-ħolqa prinċipali kienet il-poetessa Taljana, Paola Mara de Maestri.
Wara Mario Vella qara Studju Kritiku dwar l-Antoloġija b’referenza partikolari dwar il-poeżiji bl-Ingliż tal-poeti Maltin. Vella qal li dan hu pass għaqli ħafna u fid-direzzjoni t-tajba biex inwasslu l-poeġija lokali barra minn xtutna. Wara kollox, issokta l-kelliem, forsi mhux hekk għamlu l-ewwel poeti Maltin bħal Dun Karm, Anastasju Cuschieri, Vincenzo Maria Pellegrini u oħrajn?
Alfred Massa, President tal-Għ.P.M. qal li dan hu kapitlu ieħor magħluq tal-Għaqda li dejjem tara kif mhux biss tiftaħ beraħ il-bibien għall-poeti tagħna, imma wkoll li tesporta l-poeżija lokali f’pajjiżi barranin. Massa appella biex il-membri jkunu aktar attivi u biex isegwu l-informazzjoni dwar l-Għaqda minn fuq il-website interessanti tagħha. Huwa rringrazzja lil kulmin ħa sehem biex dan il-proġett seta’ jirnexxi.
Kien l-istess Massa li qassam il-kopji ta’ l-Antoloġiji li dawk preżenti.

POETIC ANTHOLOGY MALTA-ITALY
On Friday 11th July, at the premises of the Society of Arts,
Manufacture and Commerce in Valletta, the GHAQDA POETI MALTIN
held the official launch of the anthology I SILENZI DELLA
MONTAGNA E LE VOCI DEL MARE, and distributed copies to those
members who participated in this project. In all, there
were 30 Maltese poets and 90 Italian counterparts who have their
work included in this anthology.
Charles magro conducted the ceremony. In his initial speech he
explained how this anthology was given importance and prominence
in the way of constructive criticism in Italy as could be seen
from visits to certain
websites and blogs.
The first speaker was Emmanuel Attard Cassar, international
secretary of the Maltese Poets Association. who gave a detailed
account of how the anthology came about, from its inception,
when a member, Therese Pace, had established contact with Paola
Mara de Maestri, to its publishing. The anthology was published
in Italy with the cooperation of the CIRCOLO CULTURALE
FILATELICO NUMISMATICO DI MORBEGNO and the GHAQDA POETI MALTIN.
The link between these two entities was Paola Mara De Maestri.
In the course of the evening, Mario Vella read a critical study
of the said anthology with special reference to the Maltese
Poets' contribution. Vella said this was a wise step in the
right direction to export local poetry to
overseas markets. After all, he added, was this not what Dun
Karm, Anastasju Cuschieri and Vincenzo Maria Pellegrini and
others did before?
Alfred Massa as President of the association said this was
another successfully closed chapter for the GHAQDA POETI MALTIN,
which is always looking for ways to not only leave the doors
wide open for its poets, but to itself export their work
whenever possible. He appealed to the members to be more active,
to help sustain the association, to log on to its well kept
website frequently to be updated on the Association's activities
and news.
Finally he thanked all those who contributed towards the success of this project. It was Mr. Massa himself who distributed the copies to the poets present. A commemorative picture was taken for media and archive purposes.

Justine Caruana LLD., M.P. u personalitajiet oħra.
Alfred Massa, President tal-Għ.P.M., tkellem dwar l-iskop li għalih twaqqfet l-Għaqda fl-1975. Huwa rrefera għall-problemi li jsibu ma' wiċċhom dawk il-poeti li jitħajru jippubblikaw xogħlijiethom, għalhekk, l-Għaqda tagħmel li tista' biex tgħinhom. Anzi, fil-preżent l-Għaqda qiegħda tara kif 'il quddiem tista' ssarraf din l-għajnuna anki materjalment.
Is-Sur Tony Borg mbagħad qara messaġġ miktub għall-okkażjoni mill-Onor. Ministru Giovanna Debono. Il-Ministru Debono faħħret lil Charles Bezzina bħala poeta u ħeġġitu biex ikompli miexi fit-triq li qabad u jissokta jagħmel ġieħ lil-Letteratura Maltija kif għamlu qablu poeti Għawdxin bħala Ninu Cremona, Anton Buttigieg, Ġorġ Pisani, Ġuże' Aquilina u oħrajn. L-Onor. Debono rringrazzjat ukoll lill-Għ.P.M. għas-sehem kbir li qiegħda tagħti b'riżq il-poeżija f'pajjiżna.
Lejn tmiem is-Serata Charles Bezzina rringrazzja lil kulmin ta' sehmu biex dik l-okkażjoni kisbet is-suċċess mixtieq. Wara saret bibita għal dawk preżenti.

Furthermore, he added, at present, the association is looking into ways and means to be able to translate this help even in a material way in the future.
Mr Tony Borg then read a message written by the Hon. Minister for Gozo Giovanna Debono for the occasion. She spoke highly of Charles Bezzina as a poet and encouraged him to persevere in this path to keep on honouring the Maltese Literature as other former Gozitan poets like Ninu Cremona, Anton Buttigieg, Ġorġ Pisani, Ġuże Aquilina and others did. She also thanked the Għaqda Poeti Maltin for its valid and significant contribution towards poetry in our country.
Towards the end of the evening, Charles Bezzina thanked all those who contributed towards the success of the evening. Afterwards, those present enjoyed some light refreshments.

The square behind the Zejtun Parish Church, for the fourth consecutive year was the natural venue for a poetry evening held in coordination between the local council and the Għaqda Poeti Maltin. The mild evening breeze contributed to make it a pleasant encounter.
As usual there was a good attendance. The evening was conducted by the association secretary Charles Magro, while Walter Micallef, by now synonymous with these evenings, contributed the musical interludes.
In his opening speech, the Association President , Alfred Massa, asked the poets to look for the message in each poem as this makes a poem alive and fruitful, providing a link between poet and reader.
On his part, Joe Attard the żejtun mayor thanked all those who came to listen to the poems read and all those who contributed with their works to make a success of the evening. He also thanked the association and the Grupp ilħna poeżija that the councillor Toni Seychell heads for their mutual interest in raising awareness to the beauty of poetry.

DARBA OĦRA FIL-MOSTA
Nhar il-Ġimgħa 16 ta' Mejju 2008, l-Għaqda Poeti Maltin laqqgħet lill-membri u ħbieb tagħhom fir-Razzett tal-Markiż, il-Mosta. F'atmosfera tar-Rebbiegħa fil-bitħa ta' dan il-lokal, dawk preżenti qraw u semgħu poeżiji dwar suġġetti varji bil-Malti, bl-Ingliż, bit-Taljan u bl-Esperanto.
Peress li din id-darba ma kienx hemm interventi mużikali dawk preżenti, immexxija minn Charles Magro, għamlu diversi kummenti dwar il-poeżija inġenerali kif ukoll dwar xi poeżiji li nqraw. Kienu ppreżentati kotba ġodda tal-poeżija minn Patrick Sammut u Lino Grech u min xtaq seta' jixtrihom bi prezz ridotii.
F'kelmtejn fil-bidu tal-Lejla, il-President tal-Għaqda, Alfred Massa, irrefera għar-raħal tal-Mosta li qed jiċċelebra l-400 sena bħala parroċċa kif ukoll għall-Għaqda Filantropika Talent Mosti li qiegħda tfakkar il-25 sena mit-twaqqif tagħha. Massa stqarr li kull poeta hu ħieles li jikteb dwar suġġett li jrid, kif ukoll, li jlibbes vrusu kif irid. Fl-istess waqt, fakkar li kull tip ta' poeżija għandha s-siwi tagħha. Imbagħad il-poplu jagħżel dak li jogħġbu.
L-Għaqda
Poeti Maltin tiddiżapprova
"Il-Mument" (25.05.2008)
Sur Editur,
L-Għaqda Poeti Maltin tiddiżapprova l-fatt li waqt iċ-ċerimonja ta' l-għoti Honoris Causa mill-Universita' ta' Malta lill-attur komoku Taljan, Roberto Benigni b'konnessjoni mal-poema ta' Dante La Divina Commedia, it-traduttur Malti, Alfred Palma, kien injorat għal kollox.
Tajjeb ngħidu, li Alfred Palma, Membru Onorarju tal-Għaqda Poeti Maltin, ittraduċa f'ilsienna dan ix-xogħol kbir Taljan fl-1991; xogħol li ħadlu 20 sena minn ħajtu. Iżda rnexxielu jwettqu b'suċċess kif irrikonoxxewh diversi kritiċi lokali u barranin.
l-ironija hi, li ftit xhur ilu, Alfred Palma kien mistieden miċ-Centro Culturale di Ravenna biex f'Settembru li ġej jieħu sehem fil-Progetto Dante. Hemm, fil-bażilika Franġiskana, qrib il-qabar ta' l-istess Dante, jirrappreżenta lil Malta, bħala wieħed mill-pajjiżi li għandhom traduzzjoni ta' dan il-kapulavur letterarju.
Il-veru każ: Nemo profeta in patria sua !
CHARLES MAGRO
Segretarju Għ.P.M.
The Għaqda Poeti Maltin strongly disapproves that during Roberto Benigni's short stay in Malta, author, poet and translator Alfred Palma was completely ignored.
It took Palma, an honorary member of the Għaqda, 20 years to give Malta its one and only complete and rhymed version of Dante's Divina Commedia, which he published in 1991 to wide acclaim, both locally and abroad.
His place during the Serata Dantesca was with Prof. Robert Hollander and Benigni, the more so when Malta was the hosting country and had its own translation of the Commedia.
How ironic that earlier this year Palma was invited by the Centro Culturale di Ravenna to take part in this year's Progetto Dante, so that in Ravenna next September, he will be proudly adding Malta's name to those of other countries who can boast the Commedia in their native tongue.
LEJLA TA' POEŻIJA
OĦRA FIL-FURJANA
Għat-tielet sena konsekuttiva l-Għaqda Poeti Maltin organizzat Lejla ta' Poeżija fiċ-Ċentru Kulturali Franġiskan, il-Furjana, nhar il-Ġimgħa 28 ta' Marzu 2008.
Il-President tal-Għaqda, Alfred Massa, f'messaġġ qasir irrefera għall-Kungress li sar is-sena l-oħra f'Richmond (USA) dwar il-Poeżija Reliġjuża llum. Għalkemm dan kien organizzat mill-Knisja Presbiterjali, attendew poeti, kittieba u osservaturi li jħaddnu twemmin differenti, inkużi kattoliċi.
Filwaqt li Massa rrefera għal xi punti li ħarġu minn dan il-Kungress, staqsa jekk f'Malta għandux isir Kungress simili meta f'pajjiżna teżisti wkoll mewġa ta' materjaliżmu li qiegħda kontinwament thedded il-ħajja spiritwali tal-poplu tagħna.
Fil-Lejla nqraw poeżiji bil-Malti, bit-Taljan u bl-Ingliż. Fost il-poeti preżenti kien hemm Therese Pace, Raymond Grech, Lyanne Ellul, Emm. Attard Cassar, John Mallia, Lino Grech, Rina Camilleri, Therese Abela, Frans Borg, Salv Sammut u oħrajn. Patrick Sammut qara Studju qasir dwar San Franġisk fil-poema ta' Dante La Divina Commedia.
Ħa sehem ukoll il-kitarrista u kantawtur, Walter Micallef. Mexxa l-Lejla Charles Magro.

ANOTHER
LITERARY EVENING IN FLORIANA
For the third consecutive year the Għaqda Poeti Maltin organized a Poetry Reading Event at the Franciscan Cultural Centre in Floriana on Friday 28th March 2008.
The Association President, Alfred Massa, in a short message he delivered, referred to the Congress held last year in Richmond (USA) regarding religious poetry today. Although this congress was organized by the Presbyterian Church, poets, writers and observers embracing different religions including the Roman Catholics attended the event.
While Alfred Massa referred to various points that emerged from this congress, he asked whether something similar should be held in Malta, when in our country we are also experiencing a wave of materialism which is effecting and threatening our nation's spiritual life.
During the evening poems in Maltese, English and Italian were read by the poets the present, among others Therese Pace, Raymond Grech, Leanne Ellul, Emmanuel Attard Cassar, John Mallia, Lino Grech, Rina Camilleri, Therese Abela, Frans Borg, Salv Sammut, Patrick Sammut, Charles Magro and Joseph Bonnici..
Patrick Sammut delivered a short study about Saint Francis in Dante's La Divina Commedia.
Singer/author Walter Micallef entertained those present with his folk songs while Charles Magro animated the evening.

Sunday Times, 9th March 2008
English poet Stephen Morris attended a poetry evening organised by the Għaqda Poeti Maltin. The Vittoriosa event was organised in collaboration with the local council. It was held at Couvre Porte Hall last month.
In a brief speech, Morris, from Birmingham, glossed over his poetic output, spread over 10 volumes. He also writes drama and prose, but his forte is poetry and his verses have found an esteemed place in various worthy literary magazines, such as Connections, Dial 174, Purple Patch, Linkway and others.
GħPM president Alfred Massa, in his introductory speech, highlighted the fact that, as it has done in the past, Vittoriosa welcomed again all poetry lovers within its historic walls, paying tribute to this most noble art, as did many other localities all over Malta and Gozo.
As usual, a good number of poems, in Maltese, English and Italian were read out by those present, who filled the hall and enjoyed the hallowed atmosphere, deliciously enhanced by the beautiful voice of poetess Miriam Camilleri, who also possesses a warm, delightful voice. She sang Qalu li raw, Born Free and Roma non fa la stupida stasera, accompanied on an electric piano by young organist Johanna Galea.
Tribute was paid to the late poet Anton Buttiġieġ, on the 25th anniversary of his death. Melina Cornish read an essay about this poet, written by Ġużè Chetcuti, while poets John Mallia and Mario Attard read out two beautiful poems, lyrical tributes to nature.
At the end of the evening, Morris took the floor, signing copies of his poetry collection Limbus of the Moon against a pledge to give a few euros to a good cause.
ENGLISH POET IN LEJLA
TA' POEZIJA AT VITTORIOSA
The English Poet Stephen Morris participated in a Lejla ta' Poezija at Couvre Porte in Vittoriosa, organised by the Maltese Poets Association and the Birgu Local Council.
Mr Morris, who hails from Birmingham, has published ten poetry books and has taken part in poetry manifestation in various countries. His poetry appeared in literary magazines such as Connections, Dial 174, Linkway, Purple Patch, etc.
In a short speech he gave a resume of his poetic life and later read some of his poems.
Alfred Massa, the Association's President, in a short speech said that it was more than fitting that poetry arrives also at Vittoriosa, a city rich in history and once a shelter for many local artists.
Poems in Maltese and in English were read by those present, poets like Alfred Palma, Alfred Massa, Raymond Grech, John Mallia, Miriam Camilleri, Mario Attard, Anthony Farrugia, Guido Lanfranco, Salv Sammu, Therese Pace. Some young poets also read their verses.
A special corner was dedicated to the late Anton Buttigieg who this year happens to be the 25 th anniversary of his death. Melina Cornish read a short biography by Guze' Chetcuti while John Mallia and Mario Attard read some of his poems.
Miriam Camilleri sang three songs in three different languages: Maltese, English and Italian accompanied by young organist Johanna Galea.
Finally, Mr Massa presented Mr John Boxall, the local Mayor, with a set of poetic anthologies published by the Maltese Poets Association.

The poetry contest winners with Għaqda Poeti Maltin president Alfred Massa.
In the light of all that presently hinders childrens' creativity, solidarity, enthusiasm for voluntary work, and a positive attitude towards sacrifice, poetry is an excellent way to promote a love for all things beautiful, Alfred Massa, Għaqda Poeti Maltin President, said at a recent childrens' poetry contest prize-winning ceremony, at Gużeppi Despott Hall, Floriana.
Massa told parents and teachers that such contests helped to sow the right seed in children who were entrusted to their care to become the men and women of tomorrow. The contest was open for Year 6 primary pupils and the judging panel was formed by Charles Casha, Mary Grace Caruana and Carmel Bianchi.
First prize went to Ulied l-istess Bambin by Francesca Attard; second prize Tfajjel Diżleksik by Shane Borg, and third Il-Paci by Jacqueline Licari.

occasion of the liturgical feast of St Joseph (March 19), the patron of the
locality. The activity consisted
of dancing, singing and poetry reading by members of the
G]aqda Poeti Maltin.
The poetry section was presented by Dr. Joseph Axiaq, Ass. Secretary of
the Association and the poems read treated the subjects suggested by the
organizers:
Mr Alfred Massa, president of
the Maltese Poets Association, stated that they welcome similar invitations as
they believe that poetry and music complement each other very much.
While he thanked the participants, Mr Massa expressed his
disappointment that they could not include all the poems they received because
of the limited time allocated to them by the organizers.

With the death of Karmenu Ellul Galea, the Ghaqda Poeti Maltin has suffered the loss of yet another of its honorary life members.
Mr Galea was a man of strong character, widely known for his tireless work in the fields of trade unionism and literature, particularly poetry. This is evidenced by the many books he has left as legacy, among which the anthology Twemmini (Veritas Press, 1971).
Mr Galea wrote and published innumerable other poems in various local papers and publications. His style, as one would expect, was purely traditional, and his demise closes another chapter on romantic Maltese poetry.
The Gh.P.M. has always given Karmenu Ellul Galea his well-deserved dues and recognised the worth of his verse. Thus, while praying to the Good Lord to grant him eternal rest, it expresses its most sincere condolences to his family.
Karmenu Ellul Galea has passed on to reap what he rightfully deserves.
He was a quiet person in the true Maltese sense of the word, but deep inside he was a churning volcano. He was much involved in local politics and band clubs but he was better known for his literary works; the fratellanzi, the history of trade unions and the dockyard, as well as journalism and poetry.
Karmenu was a loving husband and a caring father, but he was also my 'Ziju Karm'. He was married to my mother's sister Carmela and they were my baptismal godparents.
When I was just a boy my mother would take me to visit them, and he would be upstairs tapping away at his typewriter. I was told not to disturb him but he always had a smile for me, although Auntie Karm's sweets had a better effect!
When my family returned from overseas, he was one of the first relatives I had visited. He showed great interest in the way of life in Australia and about how the Maltese communities there function. Ziju Karm was a figure in our family; always regarded as the scholar and the 'learned one'.
I remember when he was working on the history of the dockyard and I happened to be visiting. Knowing of my interest in the history of the British services in Malta, he recounted the story of HMS Melita and the 'Melita slipway'; something that I had not known and found very fascinating.
Unfortunately time has no mercy and when Auntie Carmela was not well, he packed up that same old typewriter to look after her.
His children Alfred, Lora, Antoinette and especially Mary Grace were always there. When Auntie Karm passed away, he showed great courage.
Just three years from that sad day, it was his turn. We'll all miss him but he has left us with a legacy of fond memories.
L-GHAQDA POETI MALTIN FIL-FURJANA
POETRY READING AT FLORIANA
At the invitation of the Grupp Familji Frangiskani, the Maltese Poets' Association organised a Poetry Evening at the Capuchins Hall in Floriana. Charles Magro as usual animated the evening.
Alfred Massa, president of the Association, asked whether religious poetry is still relevant today. If it is, Massa said, it should be addressed in a modern way. Poets should no longer look back and glorify the past, but they should
tackle contemporary problems facing religion nowadays, stressed the speaker.
Poems read were in English and Maltese and poets treated various subjects: from religion to patriotism, from
environment to personal recollections. Patrick Sammut read a short literary study about St. Francis poem dating back to the thirteenth century "Il-Ghanja tal-Hlejjaq", while Walter Micallef entertained those present with his lyrics accompanied by his guitar.
Though the weather was not pleasable, however, one could see also one or two poets from Gozo. Refreshments were held after the event.

Sinjuri,
Ħbieb
tal-Poeżija,
Uħud
isostnu li kulħadd jitwieled poeta. Jista’
jkun. Imma
ċertament mhux kulħadd għandu l-kapaċita' li jinseġ
il-ħsibijiet u l-emozzjonijiet tiegħu f’poeżija.
Bħalma, mhux kulħadd kappaċi jpitter, jiskolpixxi,
jikkomponi, jirreċta, eċċ. Għax
il-fergħat ta’ l-arti ma ġġibhomx biss bl-istudju; dawn iridu
qabel xejn jitwieldu miegħek. Huma
doni li l-Mulej jagħtihom lil min jidhirlu Hu.
Fi
kliem ieħor, aħna lkoll hawn miġbura, għandna għax inħossuna
kburin u fl-istess ]in grati lejn il-Mulej talli għoġbu jagħtina
dan id-don sabiħ tal-poeżija. Allura,
sa ċertu punt, kellu raġun il-poeta “Tan-Nirien”, Karmenu Vassallo,
jisħaq illi poerta nascitur. Imma
anqas dan ma hu biżżejjed; hemm bżonn li dan id-don il-poeta jiżviluppaħ
permezz ta’ studju, qari u tħaddim tal-versi.
Imbagħad jasal is-sodisfazzjon meta l-poeta jara jimmaterjalizza dak
li jkun ikkrea f’moħħu u f’qalbu; sodisfazzjon li jissokta jiżdied
meta l-poeżija tieg]u jaqsamaha ma’ ħaddieħor.
Dan
hu wieħed mill-għanijiet ta’ dan il-konkors. Huwa
offerta, stedina, lil tant poeti moħbijin.
Mhux importanti jekk il-poeżija llejla tirbaħx jew le; l-importanti
li dik il-poeħija nqrat u għaddiet mill-għarbiel
- iva dejjem suġġettiv
- ta’ tliet eżaminaturi.
Ma baqgħetx aktar maqfula f’kexxun għad-dlam, imma ħarġet
għad-dawl u tgawdiet minn
xi ħadd li qraha.
L-Għ.P.M. hija Għaqda Letterarja providenzjali għall-poeti tagħna. Hija mezz ta’ għajnuna kemm għall-poeti stabbiliti, kif ukoll għal dawk li g]adhom ma wasalux sa hawn. Hija Għaqda li taħdem bla heda biex tqanqal l-interess fost il-poplu tagħna lejn il-poezija. u nirringrazzja lill-familja Buontempo li ddeċidiet li toffri l-Ewwel
Premju lil dik il-persuna li l-poeżija tagħha tirbaħ it-taqsima

Power of poetry
Being the only association in Malta that caters exclusively for poetry lovers and writers, and knowing full well the very low rating that Mario Griscti (Expressive Poetry, July 26) has always given us, the Ghaqda Poeti Maltin feels that it must have been the poetry association in his line of fire when he called poetry associations in Malta "a static conglomeration of dummies".
His outburst is unreasonable, unless fomented by envy and past grudges against some individual members of the Ghaqda Poeti Maltin. Let me tell him as well that he is badly informed about the association's activities and that his knowledge about the aims and possibilities of poetry is dangerously scant.
The whole world is worried about what is happening in the Near East and in other places. But, rather than take sides, and rather than doing the politicians' work which has proved to be so inefficient so far, we believe in instilling in the hearts of people the love for poetry which is conducive to a changing in man's mentality towards a peaceful co-existence with everyone, regardless of colour, religion, etc.
Our "so called poetry association", the Ghaqda Poeti Maltin, is in its 31st year of existence and its achievements are countless. Suffice it to say that we have published no less than six anthologies of poems written by our "pseudo poet" members, and all of these have done very well, in Malta and abroad. They received only favourable comments by literary critics. An anthology of our members' poems, in Esperanto, was published in South America and it has done so well that we were asked to compile another anthology of our members' works, which will be published shortly in New York.
Since its foundation the Ghaqda Poeti Maltin has had, as members, people of the calibre of Guzè Chetcuti, Fr Wistin Born, Gorg Pisani, Karmenu Vassallo and others of the same ilk. It has been also very ably led by its founder president, Mg Dr Amante Buontempo, for 25 years and, since his demise, by Alfred Massa, both of whom are acclaimed as stalwarts in Malta's literary scenario. Besides, our association is being acknowledged as the foremost exponent of today's poetry when it is invited by a host of local councils and other literary, religious and lay organisations, and asked to organise poetry evenings to be included in their celebrations.
It is also true that our association, as members, has some people who are at the very initial stages of putting their inner-felt sentiments to verse. But this is exactly what gives stature to the Ghaqda Poeti Maltin, because it is the only literary association that fills these beginners with enthusiasm for the art and encourages them to ameliorate their output, not primarily to become poets but to be able to partake better of the satisfaction that is to be had from writing poetry and instil in them the belief that poetry can indeed change the world. I invite Mr Griscti to join us in this endeavour if he thinks that he can contribute.
May I tell Mr Griscti and all those who think that only they have the solutions to the world's problems, that peace is not achieved by fomenting hatred or by propagating the "an eye for an eye" philosophy. Peace is achieved by propagating what fulfils the spirit and what is beautiful in life, while at the same time edging out evil from the minds of people. The Times of Malta, August 23, 2006.
L-Għaqda Poeti Maltin għal darb'oħra ħadet sehem f'attività Marjana oħra. Din seħħet fl-Imdina għat-tieni sena konsekuttiva, din id-darba fi Pjazza Katidral. Il-Lejla ta' Poeżija saret f'kollaborazzjoni mal-Knisja tal-Karmnu u l-festa fit-23 ta' Lulju 2003 fit-8.15 ta' filgħaxija. Dawn preżenti għall-manifestazzjoni kienu numerużi, u preżenti kien hemm il-banda “L-Isle Adam” flimkien ma' għadd ta' membri ta' l-Għaqda Poeti Maltin li qraw numru ta' poeżiji ddedikati kollha kemm huma lill-Madonna. Marian Manifestation at Mdina
On Sunday July 23rd. the Maltese Poets Association (Għaqda Poeti Maltin) was invited by the Carmelite Community of Mdina to partecipate in the conclusion of the feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel.
When the procession reached Cathedral Square, a Marian Manifesation took place in front of a large congregation, with the partecipation of the L'Isle Adam Band of Rabat and the Gh.P.M.
Marian hymns were played with the congregation joining in, while poems were read by members of the Ghaqda. Main theme of the poems was Our Lady. Compere was Charles Magro, general secretary of the Maltese Poets Association. Among the poets taking part were Gorg Borg, Raymond Grech, Alfred Massa, Peter and M.G.Caruana, Carmel G Cauchi, Dr.Joe Zammit Tabona, Manuel Attard Cassar, Therese Pace and Charles Magro. The Manifestation came to an end by a short speech of thanksgiving by Fr.Alexander Vella O.C. the Carmelite's Provincial. Fr. Vella stressed the importance of following Mary's footsteps to be real devotees of Our Lady.

Many breezes
While On Poetry: my comments last Sunday on the breeze currently encouraging Maltese literature brought me various direct reactions. One pointed out that l-Ghaqda Poeti Maltin (Maltese Poets' Society) was foremost in organising poetry evenings many years ago, and still does in our towns and villages. It too has a web page, and publishes a review.
In such references it is easier to leave out parts than to detail the whole. The important thing is that the literary breeze is there, and picking up.
